Preserving Historical Charm

Some projects have a life of their own, and this one is no exception. We have been working with the homeowner on many projects for 30 years. Over time, we have endeavored to keep the flavor of this Arts and Crafts home consistent with its roots. Our history-sensitive client believes it is their responsibility to maintain this beautiful home, while creating solutions relevant to today’s living.

From the original short wave radio above the living room fireplace to the beautiful new greenhouse addition that was created in 1990, every element has been chosen to complement the home’s Arts and Crafts heritage.

As you enter this beautiful home, the collections of wonderful art pieces and historic accessories are a delight. All wall covering materials are historically correct and were sourced from Bradbury & Bradbury Historic Wallpapers. Furnishings and accessories are original or are reproductions true to the time period. Design elements that are relative to the historic aspects of the home have been maintained and restored where necessary. Beautiful details have remained, and where necessary, lighting has been updated. The updates to the sconces in the dining room helped to maintain the original ceiling design while complementing its furnishings and improving livability. Updating the interiors with contemporary accents, like a live edge dining table and hand-carved dining chairs, enhances the space beautifully.

Over the years, the most difficult part of this design project has been researching accurate materials and yet still relevant for a home that’s a hundred years old. Although it’s not a museum, the client desired to maintain the historic significance of this home. We even helped to choose exterior paint that was period-appropriate.

It takes a special craftsmen to restore each element appropriately to the era. Updating plumbing and electrical to fit today’s standards for comfortable living was necessary. Although it’s been a giant challenge, we have enjoyed every element of it. Our client loves their home and delights in finding appropriate accessories and historic items to display in it.

Their visitors enjoy the tour from the front door, through the beautiful curiosity-laden interiors, into the sun room, and eventually the garden beyond. It is a wonderful transport back in time.
