About Our Founder

Marilyn S. Hansen, FASID, IIDA, NCIDQ, Founder of The Designers, is a Fellow of the American Society of Interior Designers. In this role, she is one of an experienced and diverse community of professionals who create insight in the design industry. She and her ASID Team developed and taught a national course about Ethics for the Interior Design industry.

Marilyn was the first person in the State of Nebraska to attain NCDIQ status, a credential from the Council for Interior Design Qualification. This industry credential requires a Bachelors degree in Interior Design, three years of professional experience, and successfully passing a rigorous exam. NCIDQ Certification is nationally recognized as the industry’s indicator of excellence in interior design principles; it is the gold standard. It also shows a designer’s commitment to the profession.

Some states require the NCDIQ exam to become a Registered Interior Designer. And some industries require NCIDQ Certification to submit interior designs, such as the Hospitality Industry. This expertise has enabled The Designers to complete many award-winning Residential and Hospitality projects for their clients.

Why Professional Credentials Matter

These days, many people call themselves an Interior Designers. In Nebraska and many other states, there are no regulations defining that designation. A person who calls themselves an Interior Designer might have no formal training in Interior Design – they may be good at selecting color schemes, arranging rooms and accessories, but have no training in construction or building codes. If you’re renovating your home, you need more than a person with a “flair for design.”

The design staff at The Designers are all Members of ASID – the American Society of Interior Designers. Each has completed at least 60 semester hours of education in Interior Design, during which students attain specialized knowledge of interior construction, building systems and components, building codes, equipment, materials, and furnishings. Students are also taught to prepare documents and drawings describing the design of interior spaces. They learn to protect the welfare, safety and health of the public. If someone says they are an Interior Designer and cannot draft a blueprint, chances are they have not completed professional education in Interior Design.

In addition, to maintain excellence, ASID requires ongoing education. This is a profession that requires professional commitment and is not a hobby.

Our advice: Ask about credentials before you hire an Interior Designer. An Interior Designer with professional qualifications won’t cost you more – they will save you money! Selecting appropriate materials for your project that will meet building codes and that are aesthetically pleasing will create a successful project.
