Creating a Phoenix

A Townhome  Gets New Life After a Fire

A fire raged through this townhome in late 2021, destroying nearly everything. The owners and their pets were the only survivors. Our challenge was to make a new home rise from the ashes like a Phoenix, keeping the original footprint and making improvements along the way.

The home had design challenges even before the fire – lack of light and a less-than-ideal layout were high on the list of changes to be made. The new floor plan maximizes space and has a better flow. Glass was used throughout the project to increase a feeling of light and spaciousness. Glass doors were installed in the entryway, dining, and a stair railing. A fireplace became “see through” providing unity between the entryway and the living room. Glass shelving was used in the entryway.

Space for entertaining became available as we streamlined the kitchen with better countertop space and storage, a wine refrigerator and coffee bar. The kitchen flows into the dining room, where guests can easily enjoy good food and good conversation.

The bathroom was updated, as we removed a sunken tub and replaced it with a freestanding tub. The space became even more functional with a walk-in shower with a built-in seat and door-less entrance. Explore our blog for more content like this.

The color scheme was a challenge because they wanted to incorporate an artistic table they were gifted from friends when everything was burned. With those items came art and two gold lamps for the primary bedroom. Using these treasures in the project encouraged them to consider using gold accents instead of more common silver. The gold theme plays throughout the townhome, especially in the kitchen, where gold elements are found in the kitchen tile.

Overall, the renovation of this space has erased all memory of the disastrous fire. Our clients have a new home in the old space that has become their dream home.
