St. Mary’s Church

A Mid-Century Church Renovation

Over the years, churches have become some of our favorite projects. It’s important that the design relates to the spiritual focus of the church and learning about their individual philosophies. The interior design is crucial to the church’s atmosphere, welcoming presence and devotional focus

We kept all this in mind as we began to work with St. Mary’s Church in Bellevue, Nebraska. They wanted to expand the foyer – called the Narthex. Building codes imposed some space restrictions, so the existing brick exterior would now find itself part of the interior. Mosaics from 1956 were preserved, and would become part of the interior.

Incorporating the existing brick colors and tones from the mosaic, as well as the pine-stained wood ceiling allowed for continuity to the existing space. Faux stone tile covers the support columns, giving the illusion columns a suggestion of strength. The new vaulted wood ceiling was stained to reflect the existing wood in the original space.

An added feature is the perforated acoustical wood panels that were added to the lower portions of the Narthex. These worked to improve sound absorption. Distracting noise was a major problem before we installed these panels.

Special attention was given to the baptismal font. Using granite matching the altar and a combination of honed and polished granite we were able to match the aged look of the font. The antiqued bronze baptismal bowl and its rippling water fountain were a beautiful complement.

Mid Century Modern light fixtures were chosen to pay tribute to the 1956 founding of the original church. Accessibility of the Narthex was also improved, and an elevation and accessible restroom were added.

We were pleased to work with members of the parish and architect Ralph Gladbach to bring a new vision and life to this beautiful church.
